Essential techniques, methods, and materials used in grades P-5 art, music and physical education classrooms. The importance of developing skills in art, music, and physical education according principles of childhood growth and development will be emphasized. Attention will be given to the integration of art, music, and physical education into other subject areas and their significance to overall learning. OBJECTIVES. Students will 1. gain a knowledge of famous artists and musicians of various cultures around the world 2. learn elementary art, music, and PE terminology, concepts, and content 3, know basic materials and techniques for art, music and PE use in the elementary classroom 4. know how to integrate art, music and PE into other subject areas 5. develop a biblical perspective on elementary grades art, music and PE curriculum and instruction 6. understand developmental issues for learning art, music and PE 7. be able to develop lesson plans for instruction in art, music, and PE TEXTBOOKS. Instructional methods include, but are not limited to, lectures, discussions, small group sharing, internet use, presentations, and hands-on activities. USE OF TECHNOLOGY. Technology will be explored for pertinent web sites, learning resources, and teaching/learning tools. DIVERSITY. Content will cover teaching methods and management strategies that provide appropriate challenge to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. COURSE ASSESSMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS. (Specifics will be provided in class) a. Teaching an Art Lesson Reflection: Teach a child in grades K-5 one of the lessons we did in class. Write a reflection on the experience. Attach the drawing to your written assignment (15%) (OBJ 2, 3, 4, 7) b. PE Position Paper: Why should PE be a part of the elementary school program? (15%) (OBJ 3, 4, 5, 6) c. Conduct one of the assessments in the PE text with a child. (15%) (OBJ 3, 6) e. Art Position Paper: Why should Art be part of the elementary school program? (15%) (OBJ 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) f. Music in the Classroom Paper (15%) (OBJ 2, 3, 4, 5) g. Quizzes on Art, Music, PE (15%) (OBJ. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) h. Music video Response Paper (10%) (OBJ 2, 4, 6) LATE WORK. It is important that homework is turned in when it is due. I can accept late work, but the grade will be reduced on late assignments. ATTENDANCE. Considering the amount of material to be covered (art, music, physical education), attendance at every session will be important to doing well in the course. The grade for the course may be reduced for absences. COURSE CALENDAR.
